Coordination Meeting: VP U Nyo Saw delivered the opening address

The coordination meeting of the National Natural Disaster Management Committee was held Monday afternoon at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw.

Chairman of the National Natural Disaster Management Committee and Vice President U Nyo Saw attended the meeting and delivered an opening address.

In his remarks, Vice President U Nyo Saw stated that the purpose of holding the meeting was for the National Committee, which is primarily responsible for disaster management in Myanmar, to review the completion of rehabilitation efforts following damages and losses caused by climate change impacts and previous natural disasters.

The meeting was also intended to understand and coordinate preparedness, preventive measures, and response readiness arrangements undertaken by ministries, Nay Pyi Taw, regions, and states for potential future natural disasters. He also provided guidance on making the necessary advance preparations.

Afterwards, Vice Chairmen of the Committee, Lt-Gen. Nyunt Win Swe and Dr. Soe Win, explained the preparatory measures that had already been undertaken. Attendees also presented sector-wise preparedness activities aimed at minimizing losses and damages from possible natural disasters, ensuring timely response capabilities, and preparations for post-disaster rehabilitation and recovery operations.

Subsequently, the Committee Chairman, Vice President coordinated and addressed the necessary matters arising from the presentations and delivered concluding remarks, it’s reported.

Floods and heavy rain hit greenhouses in Turkiye

Heavy rainfall and flooding have once again damaged agricultural lands and greenhouses in Amasya, Turkiye. The affected areas had already been flooded on May 16 after the Yesilirmak River overflowed following extreme weather conditions. A downpour lasting about 15 minutes struck the villages, causing further damage to cultivated fields and greenhouse facilities.

Small-scale floods were also reported across the region after the rainfall. Teams from the State Hydraulic Works continue their efforts in the area without interruption. Meanwhile, the water level of the Yesilirmak River has visibly increased once again, raising concerns among local residents and farmers.

Death toll reaches 22 in China rains, 20 more missing

Chinese state media reported on Wednesday that at least 22 people have died and 20 others are missing across central and southern country following record-breaking torrential rains.

The weave of severe rainfall which began over the weekend in provinces such as Hunan, Guizhou, and Hubei, has resulted in significant property damage and disruption to local infrastructure. Chinese authorities allocated over 150 million yuan in emergency disaster relief funds across the hardest-hit regions to support ongoing search and rescue operations and infrastructure repairs.

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck in south China

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, early Monday, leaving three people missing and four others hospitalized. The quake hit Liunan District at 00:21 at a depth of eight kilometers. Before and after the quake, there were a total of five quakes ranging from 2.2 and 3.2 magnitudes.

As of Monday, the quake had caused the collapse of 13 buildings, with over 7,000 residents being evacuated. Emergency, fire and police authorities are carrying out rescue operations. Guangxi’s regional earthquake relief headquarters launched a Level-III emergency response.

A moderate earthquake strikes Kyauktan, Yangon

According to the announcement of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, at 08:00 am on 18 May, an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred, centring about nine miles south of Kyauktan Township, Yangon Region.

Similarly, another quake of magnitude 2.7 hit at 11:06 am, centring 58 miles east of Yangon and 39 miles west of Mawlamyine.

“This morning earthquake is connected with the Yangon–Mottama Sea, the southern part of the Sagaing Fault. The consecutive shaking of M4–M5 level earthquakes during 17-18 May indicates that stress adjustments and releases continue along the southern offshore fault zones. It remains necessary to continue monitoring,” said an official from the AI Info Team.

Many people felt it strongly in Yangon, and a few buildings may be damaged. Recommended actions include: do not use elevators, stay away from buildings, power poles, and trees, immediately turn off gas/electricity, and listen to news, radio, or trusted media.

“If another one strikes, respond as follows: If indoors, Drop, Cover, and Hold On. If outdoors, move to an open field. Do not believe rumors; only listen to official announcements,” advised an earthquake expert.

Additionally, the DMH has announced that at 12:31 pm on the same day,  a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.5  was recorded, centring approximately 57 miles southeast of the Hakha station.

Heavy rains trigger emergency responses across China

The first widespread heavy rainfall, China experienced this year, has triggered emergency responses across the country. Level-IV flood control emergency responses were activated at 12:00 on Saturday for central China’s Hubei Province and the southwestern Chongqing Municipality, while responses at the same level were maintained for the southern province of Guangdong and the southwestern province of Guizhou.

On early Saturday, heavy rain hit Guizhou’s Zhenning Bouyei and Miao Autonomous County, with rainfall in some regions in the county exceeding 50 millimeters, Trees toppled over on some roads in Zhenning, as thunderstorms and high winds swept the city. Local authorities immediately launched emergency responses including hazard inspections and road obstacle clearance.

Extreme weather floods major North Western towns in Sri Lanka

NDMA launches mobile disaster alert system in India

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) launched mobile-based disaster communication system on Saturday. The system was unveiled at the Annual Conference 2026 of Relief Commissioners from States and Union Territories in New Delhi.

The system has been developed by the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, in collaboration with the NDMA, to ensure the timely dissemination of critical information to citizens. The system has been extensively utilized by disaster management authorities, enabling the dissemination of over 134 billion SMS alerts to date in more than 19 Indian languages during natural disasters, weather warnings, and cyclonic events.

Kenya flooding causes traffic disruption, frustrates drivers

Kenyan motorists and local residents in  Machakos County, just southeast of the capital Nairobi, face severe disruption from flooding caused by heavy rains.

Key highways and sections near the Eastern Bypass were submerged, making them difficult or impossible to pass. Water logging caused long traffic snarl-ups, with vehicles moving very slowly or getting stuck. Some drivers were trapped in flooded areas or forced to reroute, increasing frustration and delays.
