  • Europe rolls out automated border checks

The EU launched a long-delayed new border-check system for non-EU nationals on Sunday, with rail and road operators at the UK-France border giving demonstrations of their new scanning systems.

The so-called Entry/Exit System would keep track of overstays and refused entries by collecting travellers' biometric data -- facial images and fingerprints. Under the phased rollout, EU members should be operating the system at half of border crossing points after three months and have it fully deployed at six.
