A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Government of Myanmar and Yunnan Province to jointly organize the Myanmar Gems and Jewellery Exhibition in Ruili, China.
According to the MoU, the two sides will work together to further expand the gemstone trade, promote cultural exchanges, and prevent and control the illegal trade in gemstones, including jade.
The signing marks an important step toward improving border trade and formalizing the gemstone market.
The MoU to jointly host the Myanmar Gemstone Exhibition in Ruili, China, was signed on 25 February at the Haigeng Garden Conference Hall in Kunming, China, by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation of Myanmar and the deputy governor of Yunnan Province. — ASH/TH

China to suspend additional tariffs on certain imports from Canada
China had decided not to impose additional tariffs on certain imports from Canada from March 1st to Dec 31st, 2026, the Ministry of Commerce said on Friday.The Ministry said that to implement the important consensus reached between the two countries’ leaders, China and Canada had made specific arrangements to address economic and trade issues properly in such areas as electric vehicles, steel and aluminum products, and agricultural and aquatic products. On the other hand, Canadian government had recently announced partial adjustments to its additional tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum products.mitv

A total of 59 container vessels are scheduled to enter the Yangon Port in March 2026, the Myanma Authority announced.Thirteen container vessels run by M/S Cosco Shipping Line, seven each by M/S SITC Shipping Line and M/S Maersk A/S Line, six each by M/S One Line and M/S Samudera Shipping Line, five by M/S M/S MSC Line and three each by M/S CMA CGM Asia Line, M/S RCL Line and M/S Ti2 Logistics Line, two each by M/S BLPL Shipping Line, M/S Evergreen ASIA Line and M/S Land And Sea are scheduled to dock at the Yangon Port in March.The Myanma Port Authority has arranged maritime trade channels to handle increasing imports to meet domestic demand, to bolster exports, and to improve port capacity for significant arrivals of ships. Myanma Port Authority notified that it will inform exporters and importers of ship arrival schedules promptly upon an extended schedule. Yangon Port handled 60 container vessels in February and 60 in January 2026.After the new navigation channel (Kings Bank Channel) accessing the inner Yangon River was found, the draft extension work was accelerated. After that, the port can now handle larger ships. The container vessel MV SITC Zhaoming (185.99-metre LOA, 35.25-metre Beam, 29,232 GRT and 2,698 TEUs) of Hong Kong-based SITC Shipping Line docked at Asia World Port Terminal for the first time on 22 June, which is the largest ship that AWPT Port handled. — NN/KKgnlm

Myanmar Corn Industrial Association and the Philippines International Trade Corporation-PITC signed a bilateral trade agreement to boost maize export on 26 February in Manila, the Philippines, according to the Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization.This agreement is aimed at enhancing bilateral trade cooperation between the two countries, strengthening the agricultural value chain and exploring new market opportunities that will benefit industry stakeholders in both countries.Through this collaboration, Myanmar will deepen cooperation in international connectivity through trade facilitation and continue creating business opportunities for Myanmar entrepreneurs. This signing ceremony strengthens cooperation between the two countries and serves as a driving force of sustainability.Maize is the second most important crop after rice in Myanmar’s agricultural sector and is a potential cash crop. Maize is commonly grown in Shan State, Kayah State, Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay and Sagaing regions. Monsoon maize is cultivated in May and June, while winter maize is grown in October and November.Maize is an essential raw material in the feed processing industry. It is a crop with steady international demand. Maize is utilized in producing corn starch, oil and sugar-substitute sweeteners. Furthermore, some countries convert maize into biofuel (ethanol) for automobiles.Myanmar’s maize is highly demanded by Thailand, China, Vietnam and the Philippines due to its premium quality. It is also purchased by India and Bangladesh. Million tonnes are delivered to neighbouring countries through border checkpoints, generating a foreign income for the country. As the maize is easy to cultivate and has a strong market, the crop will contribute to farmers and the nation’s economy upon systematic cultivation.Thailand gives green light for maize imports under zero tariff (with Form-D), between 1 February and 31 August. However, Thailand imposes the maximum tax rate of 73 per cent on maize imports to protect the rights of their growers if the maize is imported during the maize season of Thailand.Additionally, China has been purchasing Myanmar’s maize through cross-border trade under the alternative development programme. Legitimate maize trade between Myanmar and China commenced at the end of 2022. A total of 112 Myanmar companies have been permitted for maize exports.Myanmar ships over two million tonnes of maize to foreign trade partners yearly. The maize is cultivated in Shan, Kachin, Kayah and Kayin states and Mandalay, Sagaing and Magway regions. Myanmar has three maize seasons – winter, summer and monsoon. The Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) sold over US$1.95 million to edible oil-importing companies and $1 million to fuel oil-importing companies on 27 February, along with an injection of 130,000 yuan and over 2.55 million baht into the market.CBM announced on 26 February that it would sell 50 million baht to importers. Furthermore, CBM injected three million baht into the market on that day and sold over $2.21 million to edible oil-importing companies and $1 million to fuel oil-importing companies.CBM announced on 25 February that it would inject $30 million into the fuel oil sector.CBM also sold over $2.44 million to edible oil-importing companies and $2 million to fuel oil-importing companies on that day, along with an injection of over $1.83 million, 300,000 yuan, and three million baht in the market.CBM injected 2.1 million baht and $180,000 into the market on 24 February, in addition to selling over $2.5 million to edible oil-importing companies.CBM sold $1.1 million, purchased from CMP companies, to edible oil-importing companies, in addition to selling 260,000 yuan in the market on 23 February.CBM sold over $43 million, 65 million baht and over four million yuan in January 2026. CBM aims to curb the instability in the foreign exchange market and currency devaluation. According to CBM’s notification on 15 March 2024, it has been collaborating with law enforcement agencies to combat and prosecute those who attempt to manipulate the currency market under the existing laws. CBM allowed authorized dealers (private banks) to operate online foreign exchange trading freely as per the market rate, depending on supply and demand, starting from 5 December 2023. — NN/KKgnlm
