The 2026 Mandalay Walking Thingyan Festival will feature special photography competitions highlighting intangible cultural heritage, with a particular focus on the traditions of laphet and Thanaka, according to the Mandalay City Development Committee.
As part of the festival programme, a “Laphet Cultural Celebration” and an “Intangible Thanaka Beauty Mandalay Thingyan Photo Contest” will be held to honour these cultural elements. In addition, the annual “Happy Mandalay Thingyan Photo Contest” will be held, continuing its tradition from previous years. Entries for both competitions will be assessed by professional photographers through a multi-stage judging process.
Each competition will offer three main prizes — first, second and third — as well as seven consolation prizes.
The festival will take place around the Mandalay Palace moat and will feature 45 pavilions, including the central Mandalay Maha Thingyan Pavilion and various ethnic pavilions. The event will also include performances by well-known artistes, traditional dance troupes and Myanmar orchestras, along with public donation feasts, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. — ASH/KZL
