Australian PM announces crackdown on gambling ads
On Thursday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has unveiled much anticipated reforms to gambling advertising. It will include the number of gambling ads per hour on daytime TV, the restrictions under 18 users and banning ads in sport venues.
Before announcement, the Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said that a full ban on online gambling advertising was crucial to stop the insidious and predatory behavior by gambling industry. Albanese said the government will finally table a formal response to the Murphy report when parliament returns on 12 May, the day of the federal budget.
He had been under pressure to respond to a landmark report led by the late Labor MP Peta Murphy that was handed to the government in June 2023.
