The Ministry of Energy released update on national fuel consumption and management stating petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) account for 29 percent of the country's energy consumption and are primarily used in the transportation sector.Because 97 percent of the petrol and diesel consumed in the transportation sector have to be purchased and imported from abroad, countries like Myanmar that rely heavily on imports are facing extremely difficult circumstances during the current global fuel crisis.As the State is addressing this fuel shortage by implementing strict management strategies and digital technology-based sales systems, the nation's fuel importation, distribution, and sales have gotten onto the right track, allowing us to significantly reduce fuel consumption. According to data from February 20, 2026, to date, the average daily fuel consumption has dropped from 3.54 million gallons to 2.5 million gallons. Reducing the average daily consumption rate by 29 percent will not only save approximately 6 million USD in foreign exchange spending per day but will also allow for an additional 10 days of reserve fuel storage.The State has to import about 5 million tons of fuel annually, costing over 5 billion USD. If fuel can be systematically consumed in this manner, it will save approximately 2 billion USD per year. Regarding national fuel sufficiency, there are current reserves of about 40 days for petrol and 50 days for diesel. Arrangements have already been made to import an additional 26 shipments vessels within April.
