Japan's transport ministry said a ban on the use of power banks on airplanes will go into effect on April 24. The move is in response to a number of incidents where lithium-ion mobile batteries have caught fire or started releasing smoke inside airplanes. The ministry announced on Tuesday that the new rules will apply to all flights into and out of Japan.

The ministry said the measure is in line with restrictions put in place by the International Civil Aviation Organization in March. In January 2025, a fire on a passenger jet in Busan, South Korea, was caused by a lithium-ion mobile battery stowed in an overhead bin.
