  • Japan eases rules on overseas transfers of defense equipment

At a Cabinet and National Security Council meeting on Tuesday, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae eased restrictions on the overseas transfer of defense equipment.

The rules restricting outbound shipments to five categories, such as “rescue” and “transportation,” have been abolished. The change allows, in principle, for the transfer of lethal weapons, such as escort vessels and missiles. The government will also strengthen Japan’s monitoring framework for transferred weapons.
