  • 79th Cannes Film Festival kicks off

The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival opened Tuesday in the southern French resort town of Cannes, with a selection of 22 films vying for the coveted Palme d'Or. Peter Jackson, the director of "Lord of the Rings," received the honorary Palme d'Or during the opening ceremony.  

The festival's nine-member jury is chaired by Park Chan-Wook, making him the first South Korean director to serve in the role. The festival will run until May 23.

Nine arrested in African ivory smuggling sting
Nine people were arrested following a series of sting operations across seven provinces, during which 250 kilogrammes of African ivory smuggled into Thailand via Viet Nam were confiscated. The operation resulted in the arrest of nine Thai suspects and the seizure of ivory products and processing tools, such as saws and drills.The total value of the confiscated goods is estimated at 9.9 million baht. Investigations reveal that the ivory was shipped by sea from Africa to Viet Nam, before being smuggled across the Mekong River into Thailand. The seized ivory will be stored until all legal cases are finalized and will subsequently be destroyed.mitv

Yangon Region Report for the 2024 Population and Housing Census was released at the Yangon Region Government Office on Tuesday.Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Myint Kyaing attended the event, together with Yangon Region Chief Minister U Aung Naing Thu, regional officials, Hluttaw representatives, departmental officials and invited guests. During the ceremony, the Union Minister highlighted that the 2024 Population and Housing Census was successfully conducted in October 2024 using domestic human and financial resources without international assistance.The Yangon Region report was released as part of the ongoing publication of census findings, including preliminary population data, union-level reports, and statistical summaries. The report contains detailed information on population, migration, education, labor force, employment, disability, housing, births, deaths, and living standards in urban and rural areas of Yangon Region.The Union Minister added that the data would support regional planning, policy-making, and socio-economic development, particularly in the education and healthcare sectors. The Chief Minister then reported future regional development plans based on census data, while the Deputy Minister explained findings identified in the regional report.The Union Minister later handed over the Yangon Region census report to the Chief Minister. The Union Minister later met region, district, and township officials at Yangon Region Officer’s office. They discussed the implementation of citizenship scrutiny card and UID collection activities through the La Min Project under the government’s 100-day plan.Later in the afternoon, the Union Minister proceeded to the North Okkalapa Township immigration office. There, he inspected the issuance of citizenship scrutiny and UID cards for residents with lost or damaged national ID cards, along with household registration processes. The inspection also covered biometric and biographic data collection through the e-ID system and UID issuance procedures. During the visit, the Union Minister and officials handed over citizenship scrutiny cards and UID cards under the government’s 100-day plan and provided cash assistance and foodstuff to township office staff.mitv

The Union Minister for Cooperatives and Rural Development, U Myo Zaw Thein conducted a field inspection, Tuesday morning to examine the progress of rural development activities and village-level production enterprises in the Aye Chan Tha Model Village, Tatkone Township, Nay Pyi Taw Council Area.First, the Union Minister and officials arrived at Aye Chan Tha Model Village and met with local residents at the village multipurpose hall. Responsible officials explained the development activities carried out to transform the village into a model village under the Village-Level Poverty Alleviation Model Project, which was implemented with the assistance of the Government of the People's Republic of China, as well as the ongoing implementation activities by the Department of Rural Development.Following the explanations, the Union Minister provided necessary guidance and coordinated the requests submitted by the village residents. Afterwards, the Union Minister and officials inspected the achievements realized through the Village-Level Poverty Alleviation Model Project within the village.The Union Minister provided discussions and guidance on sector-specific needs and coordinated necessary actions. Subsequently, the Union Minister and officials inspected summer paddy cultivation at the farm of a member of the Aye Chan Tha Model Agriculture and General Economic Cooperative Society in Aye Chan Tha Model Village.They met with the cooperative farmer members, and the Union Minister discussed necessary matters and coordinated the requests made by the local farmers. Following this, the Union Minister and officials also inspected the step-by-step operations of natural fertilizer production at the San Wadi Livestock and Natural Fertilizer Production Cooperative Society near Kyauk Sayit Kone Village, Pobbathiri Township, as well as the dairy cattle farming activities. Based on the explanations provided by the factory officials, the Union Minister provided discussions and guidance and addressed the operational requirements as needed, it’s reported.mitv
