A 10-metre-long female whale weighing an estimated 12 tonnes died after stranding on a beach on the island off France's Atlantic coast, on Friday evening. Authorities organized an operation to remove the carcass from the beach using heavy equipment.

Scientists said whale strandings can occur for several reasons, including Illness or injury, disorientation from shallow coastal waters, changes in ocean conditions, Noise pollution, ship strikes and Entanglement in fishing gear.
