The opening ceremony of the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum was held on June 4th at the EXPOFORUM Convention and Exhibition Centre in St. Petersburg, where Vice President U Nyo Saw attended and delivered remarks.

Also attending the ceremony were the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of the Kyrgyz Republic, Union Ministers, heads of delegations and representatives from more than 130 countries around the world, the Myanmar Ambassador to the Russian Federation, the Myanmar Consul General in St. Petersburg and officials, dignitaries and officials from invited countries, and business leaders.

First, a commemorative video for the forum was shown, followed by welcome remarks from the Governor of St. Petersburg. Vice President U Nyo Saw then delivered remarks, stating that Myanmar possesses great potential for long-term development and occupies a strategically important geographical position at the crossroads of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia.

He said that Myanmar, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, serves as a natural land bridge connecting regional markets and facilitating trade, transportation, and economic integration. He added that, in order to fully utilize these advantages, the Myanmar government is implementing policies aimed at facilitating trade and improving the business environment.

Afterward, remarks were delivered by the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, the Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, and the Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.

Earlier in the morning, the delegation led by the Vice President attended the EAEU–ASEAN Economic Dialogue, where Union Minister for National Planning, Investment and Foreign Economic Relations U Aung Kyaw Hoe participated in discussions. Later, the Vice President separately met at the center with delegations led by Leningrad Region Governor Mr. Alexander Drozdenko and Russian Minister of Economic Development Mr. Maksim Reshetnikov to discuss matters related to the cooperation.

He added that, to fully utilize on these advantages, the Myanmar government sets policies aiming at facilitating trade and improving the business environment.Moreover, the government modernizes its agriculture and livestock sectors to enhance productivity, strengthen food security and support sustainable development, and welcomes greater international cooperation and investment in these sectors. Myanmar aims to boost maize exports
Myanmar’s maize is primarily conveyed to Thailand and the Philippines, and India also imports it as per the market’s demand. Myanmar shipped about 100,000 tonnes of maize to foreign trade partners this financial year 2026-2027, said Dr Phyo Ko Ko Naing, General Secretary of the Myanmar Corn Industrial Association.Myanmar aims to meet a 1.3 million tonnes maize export target in the current FY.“Myanmar’s maize is also exported to the region beyond the leading importing country, Thailand. Thailand also offers a good price. Myanmar will try to scale export volume to other countries,” he added.The prevailing maize price is higher than that of last year. At present, maize fetches 11.7 baht per kilogramme, up from 10 baht registered in the corresponding period last year. CBM continues to inject US dollars into edible oil import sector
The Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) has been injecting US dollars into the edible oil-importing companies, with over $2.89 million on 3 June, $1.79 million on 2 June and over $646,800 on 1 June, respectively.Moreover, CBM sold $3,003 to CMP companies on 3 June after making a $48,250 valued non-trade transaction. CBM also sold over 26,400 on 2 June and over $46,000 to CMP companies on 1 June, along with $33,255 worth of non-trade transactions.CBM pumped over $51 million and 1.2 million baht into the foreign exchange market in May. CBM transacted over $70 million and 28.8 million baht in April and over $44.84 million, 61 million baht and 700,000 yuan in March 2026.CBM injected over $35 million, 34 million baht and over three million yuan in the foreign exchange market in February and over $43 million, 65 million baht and over four million yuan in January 2026.CBM has injected foreign currencies into the forex market and the edible oil and fuel oil import sector, with a view to curbing the instability in the foreign exchange market and currency devaluation and maintaining market stability. According to CBM’s notification on 15 March 2024, it has been collaborating with law enforcement agencies to combat and prosecute those who attempt to manipulate the currency market under the existing laws. CBM allowed authorized dealers (private banks) to operate online foreign exchange trading freely as per the market rate, depending on supply and demand, starting from 5 December 2023. — NN/KKgnlm
