IntroductionAcross cultures and historical periods, societies have relied on pain – physical, emotional, and social – as a means of regulating behaviour. Corporal punishment, public humiliation, and moral condemnation were long believed to cultivate discipline, responsibility, and moral improvement. However, modern psychological and neuroscientific research challenges these assumptions. Pain may deter, but it does not educate; shame may enforce conformity, but it does not cultivate ethical agency.
