Smt Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, during the 4th South Asia Agri Forum 2026 held in Yangon, addressed how reliable Myanmar’s supply of black gram (urad) and pigeon pea (tur) is.
Myanmar is highly trusted as a consistent source of various pulses, including black gram and pigeon pea. The five-year Myanmar-India pulses trade agreement brought mutual benefits to the two countries, showing a strong trade partnership, the Secretary stated.
She also conveyed the possibility of further diversifying bilateral trade between India and Myanmar in other agricultural commodities.
According to a Memorandum of Understanding between Myanmar and India signed in 2021, India has been importing 250,000 tonnes of black gram and 100,000 tonnes of pigeon pea from Myanmar for five consecutive years from the 2021-2022 financial year to the 2025-2026 financial year. This government-to-government pact contributes to the growing demand in India and strengthens market access.
Myanmar exports various pulses, including peanuts and maize, fishery products, timber and rubber. India-Myanmar bilateral trade grew to US$2.1 billion in the 2024-2025 FY from $1.9 billion in the 2020-2021 FY, with a target to reach over five billion in 2030. — ASH/KK
