The Agriculture Department and Myanmar Rice Federation (MRF) are making efforts to export Myanmar’s paddy seeds to foreign countries, including the Philippines, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
MRF has been planning for paddy seed export to Bangladesh, the Philippines and Indonesia together with the Department of Agriculture.
“Paddy is extremely valuable. When green paddy for milling is worth around US$300-400 per tonne, seeds can fetch up to $700-800 per tonne. Therefore, farmers have to estimate profit per acre and determine the grain production or seed production. The Netherlands and Belgium are the leading countries in seed production and plant breeding, holding the top position in international seed export. Myanmar has self-sufficiency in paddy seed production. Consequently, the country is planning to export the paddy seed of some varieties. Some rice seeds are still being imported,” elaborated MRF President U Ye Min Aung.
Additionally, Myanmar is producing pulse seeds as well. Yet, some pulse varieties and maize are imported.
There are two types of maize: grain corn and sweet corn. The grain corn for animal feed and processed food fetches only $200 per tonne, while sweet corn is valued at up to $500 to $600 per tonne. Therefore, it is necessary to cultivate both grain corn and sweet corn in order to reduce seed import. — ASH/KK

CBM sells $2.38M to edible oil importers
The Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) sold over US$2.38 million to edible oil-importing companies on 16 March, along with an injection of 1.15 million baht into the forex market.CBM also injected around 1.49 million baht into the foreign exchange market on 13 March. Additionally, CBM sold over $1.98 million to edible oil-importing companies on the same day.Furthermore, CBM sold $1.85 million to edible oil-importing companies on 12 March, in addition to $1.56 million and a 1.4-million-baht injection into the market.CBM has been constantly injecting large amount of US dollars to the edible oil sector, with over $1 million on 11 March, $2.1 million on 10 March, $1.97 million on 9 March, $1.96 million on 6 March, $2.65 million on 5 March, over $1.24 million on 4 March and $1 million on 3 March to the edible oil sector, respectively.CBM injected forex into the market, with a view to curbing the instability in the foreign exchange market and currency devaluation. According to CBM’s notification on 15 March 2024, it has been collaborating with law enforcement agencies to combat and prosecute those who attempt to manipulate the currency market under the existing laws. Although the freshwater fish is processed daily at Shwe Padauk Fish Market this month in Hline Township, Yangon, which mainly distributes aquatic products nationwide, the supply in the market is high while demand remains low, according to the Shwe Padauk Fish Market Development Committee.The freshwater and saltwater products from the Shwe Padauk Fish Market in Hline Township and the Kyimyindine Sanpya Fish Market are transported to the upper and lower parts of the country and the border areas with a good transport system. Currently, due to rising fuel prices, transportation challenges, increased fish feed costs, and the harvesting of fish ponds before the summer, there are difficulties in transporting and distributing freshwater products from Ayeyarwady, Yangon and Bago regions.As freshwater products continue to arrive daily, wholesale dealers at the Shwe Padauk Fish Market distribute them to cold storage factories for export, to markets across the country, and to township markets in Yangon. However, at present, export orders have been suspended, shipments of freshwater products nationwide have decreased, and consumption in township markets has declined. As a result, the market is facing an imbalance between supply and demand.“During this month, fish arrivals at the market have increased. More than a hundred trucks enter the market every day. Although supply is high, transactions are slow. The reason is that there are no export orders this month. Even though fish are distributed domestically, supply is higher than demand, making it difficult to stabilize the market. The amount being sold exceeds domestic consumption. Supply and demand are not balanced. Fish arrivals are higher this year because feed prices have risen, and raw materials such as bran and peanut cake have become scarce, even for those who have money. Therefore, farmers are harvesting their ponds and selling fish at the available market price rather than continuing to raise them. Moreover, to prevent fish deaths due to the heat in April, many farmers are harvesting and selling their fish this month, which is why fish are continuously entering the market. Since the market has become narrower, sellers are pushing sales. Because fish keep arriving, fish inflows will likely decrease later,” stated Committee Vice-Chair U Aye Ko.The Shwe Padauk Fish Market receives over 300,000 viss of freshwater products and about 30 types of freshwater products. The fish arriving at the market are being distributed in the domestic market at whatever prices are available.
