  • Japan introduces joint custody option for divorced parents

Japan has started giving divorced parents an option to share custody of their children. Up until now, only one parent was allowed to exercise parental rights. The change that takes place on Wednesday is based on a Civil Code revision made two years ago. Parents will discuss whether to seek joint or sole custody.

If they fail to agree, a family court will decide. If a court recognizes domestic violence or child abuse in the household, sole custody will be granted. Justice Minister Hiraguchi Hiroshi said the ministry will promote the spirit and the letter of the law to serve the children's best interests.
