On the Myanmar traditional New Year Thingyan Akya Day or Descent Day, which fell on April 14, the Maha Thingyan Festival is being celebrated joyfully and vibrantly across the nation.

The President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, U Min Aung Hlaing, and First Lady, Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, went to the water-play pavilion of the Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan Festival organized by the families of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services (Army, Navy, Air) and joined together with the Tatmadaw family members in celebrating the New Year water festival.

The water-play pavilion of the Maha Thingyan Festival organized by the families of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army, Navy, Air) was attended in a festive and lively manner by the President, First Lady and family members, Vice President U Nyo Saw and his spouse Daw San San Aye, Vice President Daw Nan Ni Ni Aye, Union-level dignitaries and their wives, the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services and his wife, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services and Commander-in-Chief (Army) and his wife, Union Ministers and their wives, the Chairman of the Nay Pyi Taw Council, senior military officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief and their wives, officers, other ranks, and family members, artists, Yein dance troupes and invited guests.

First, when the President and First Lady arrived at the water-play pavilion, they were welcomed and greeted by the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, General Ye Win Oo and his wife Daw Nila, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services and Commander-in-Chief (Army), General Kyaw Swar Lin and his wife Daw Nan Kuu Ku, senior military officers and their wives, responsible officials and Yein dance troupes.

Afterward, the President and First Lady, along with the attendees, watched and encouraged performances by famous artists and Yein troupes, who performed songs and elegant Yein dances together with the Myawaddy Music Band.

Subsequently, the President and First Lady sprinkled Thingyan water in accordance with Myanmar traditional customs on the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services and his wife, the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services and Commander-in-Chief (Army) and his wife, Union-level dignitaries and their wives, senior military officers and their wives, attendees, artists, and Yein dance troupes, and together they celebrated the New Year water festival, it’s reported.

The opening ceremony of the 2026 Chin State Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan Festival was held at 2:00 PM on April 13 in front of the Chin State Government Office in Hakha. Chin State Chief Minister Dr. Wong Sun Htan attended the event and delivered an opening speech.First, the Patron of the 2026 Chin State Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan Festival Organizing Steering Committee, State Chief Minister Dr. Wong Sun Htan, delivered his New Year greetings. He stated that among Myanmar's 12 seasonal festivals, the Maha Thingyan Festival is the first and longest-running festival centered around Myanmar culture.He highlighted that it is not only a nationwide celebration for Myanmar but also an internationally recognized event, having been inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. He wished everyone a happy and peaceful Thingyan in the early days of the New Year, free from danger and cleansed of the misdeeds and impurities of the old year.Afterward, the Chin State Chief Minister, the Speaker of the State Hluttaw, the Chief Justice of the State High Court, the State Ministers officially opened the Chin State Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan Festival by cutting a ribbon. The opening ceremonies for the Mandalay City Maha Thingyan Pavilion and the Central Command's "Nan Myo Thu" Maha Thingyan Pavilion were held grandly and vibrantly in the evening on April 13th to celebrate the Mandalay Myanmar Traditional Maha Thingyan Festival.At the ceremony, Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Myo Aung and Region Government Minister for Development Affairs and Mayor U Khin Maung Aye delivered greeting speeches to officially open the festival.Following this, the Region Chief Minister and officials opened the Mandalay City Maha Thingyan Pavilion by cutting a ribbon.They then enjoyed and encouraged a diverse array of entertainment, which included a total of 900 members of Yein (traditional dance) troupes comprising female students from various basic education schools, the Central Command, the National University of Arts and Culture (Mandalay), and the Mandalay City Development Committee performed the opening Thingyan song and traditional dances.They were accompanied by the Mingalar Sidaw (royal drum) and traditional orchestra of Hsaing Waing from the Department of Fine Arts, Mandalay Branch, a demonstration by the traditional royal procession troupe, a respectful display by young women representing six different periods of Myanmar history (Pyu, Bagan, Inwa, Konbaung, Yadanabon, and Contemporary) riding on beautifully decorated bull-carts, a pass-in-review performance by 8 distinct dance troupes, each consisting of 50 members, a respectful drive-by performance by the iconic Myoma Silver Swan decorated float in front of the City Pavilion, accompanied by young female students who circled the float and danced in return and various Yein dance performances and singing presentations by the famous artists.Similarly, the opening ceremony of the Central Command's "Nan Myo Thu" Maha Thingyan Pavilion was successfully held according to its agenda. The Commander of the Central Command delivered an opening address. The opening ceremony of the Nay Pyi Taw City Mayor Maha Thingyan Pavilion for the Myanmar traditional New Year Maha Thingyan Festival, was held on the morning of April 13 at the pavilion in front of the Nay Pyi Taw City Development Committee City Hall.First, Takkatho Ar Mann from the Department of Fine Arts recited the "1387 Nay Pyi Taw City Mayor Thingyan Festival New Year Mingalr Paik Sone Ya-du or Auspicious Multi Stanza Poem."
