On Showa centenary, Japan PM Takaichi pledges to bring hope to nation
The Japanese government held a ceremony in Tokyo on Wednesday to mark 100 years since the start of the Showa era. The event took place at the Nippon Budokan on Showa Day, a national holiday. Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, as well as Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae were among the attendees.
The Showa era lasted from 1926 to 1989. In her speech, Takaichi noted that the era was a time of unprecedented change, marked by the outbreak of war, the end of war, postwar reconstruction and rapid economic growth. She said that in today's Reiwa era, Japan and the world face big changes.
