Yangon-Mandalay rail journey time reduced to around 10 hours after upgrades
According to Myanma Railways, the Yangon-Mandalay train journey, which previously took more than 19 hours, now takes only 10 hours following the upgrading of the railway line.
With the completion of track improvement works on the Toungoo-Nay Pyi Taw and Nay Pyi Taw-Mandalay sections, the line has significantly improved. Modern signalling systems have been installed, and contemporary locomotives and carriages are now in use, enabling a substantial reduction in travel time.
On the Yangon-Mandalay-Yangon route, trains will stop at nine stations in total: Toegyaunggale, Bago, Nyaunglebin, Toungoo, Pyinmana, Nay Pyi Taw, Yamethin, Thazi and Kyaukse. 5-up DEMU express train departs from Yangon at 6:00 am and arrives in Mandalay at 4:00 pm, while 6-down DEMU express train leaves Mandalay at 6:00 am and reaches Yangon at 4:10 pm, making the total journey time approximately 10 hours.
Myanma Railways has been operating the 5-up and 6-down express passenger services on the Yangon-Mandalay route using modern air-conditioned DEMU coaches since 1 May. In addition to these newly extended services, the existing 11-up and 12-down express trains continue to run regularly on the same route.
Furthermore, the newly introduced air-conditioned 5-up/6-down DEMU trains consist of six coaches each — four first-class and two upper-class — accommodating up to 312 passengers. Ticket prices for the full journey are set at K34,000 for first class and K48,000 for upper class per passenger. — ASH/KNN
