Venezuela's leader announces trip to ICJ over dispute on Essequibo region
Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodríguez announced on Saturday that she is traveling to The Hague to represent her country before the International Court of Justice regarding the long-standing border dispute over the oil-rich Essequibo region. Her trip marks a significant turn in the territorial dispute, as Venezuela continues to challenge Guyana's sovereignty over the 160,000 square kilometer region, which is currently administered by Guyana.
The conflict has escalated following major offshore oil discoveries, which have given Guyana one of the world's highest oil reserves per capita. Venezuela has previously created a new state in the region and recently warned against Guyana's unilateral development of the territory.
