  • France’s unemployment rate rises to 8.1 pct in Q1 2026

FRANCE’S unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage point to 8.1 percent in the first quarter of 2026, reaching its highest level since the first quarter of 2021, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) said on Wednesday. 

According to INSEE, the number of unemployed people in France, as defined by the International Labour Organization (ILO), increased by 68,000 from the previous quarter to reach 2.6 million in the first quarter of 2026. The unemployment rate rose by 0.7 percentage point year on year. 

Over the past year, the unemployment rate increased across all age groups, rising by 2.0 percentage points among people aged 15 to 24, by 0.6 point among those aged 25 to 49, and 0.4 point among people aged 50 and above. 

Women’s unemployment rate remained broadly stable during the quarter, edging up 0.1 point to 7.7 percent, while men’s unemployment rate rose by 0.3 point to 8.5 percent, its highest level since the first quarter of 2021. — Xinhua
