Moderate earthquake hits Kyauktan in Yangon Region
According to the announcement of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, at 8 am on 18 May, an earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred, centred about nine miles south of Kyauktan Township, Yangon Region.
Similarly, another quake of magnitude 2.7 hit at 11:06 am, centred 58 miles east of Yangon and 39 miles west of Mawlamyine.
“This morning’s earthquake is connected with the Yangon-Mottama Sea, the southern part of the Sagaing Fault. The consecutive M4-M5-level earthquakes during 17-18 May indicate that stress adjustments and releases continue along the southern offshore fault zones. It remains necessary to continue monitoring,” said an official from the AI Info Team.
Many people felt it strongly in Yangon, and a few buildings may be damaged. Recommended actions include: do not use elevators; stay away from buildings, power poles, and trees; immediately turn off gas/electricity; and listen to the news, radio, or trusted media.
“If another one strikes, respond as follows: If indoors, Drop, Cover, and Hold On. If outdoors, move to an open field. Do not believe rumours; only listen to official announcements,” advised an earthquake expert.
Additionally, the DMH has announced that at 12:31 pm on the same day, a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.5 was recorded, centring approximately 57 miles southeast of the Haka station. — Htun Htun/ZN
