  • Myanmar sails into semifinal at 2026 ISTAF Sepak Takraw World Cup

The final day of the group stage and the quarterfinal matches of the 2026 ISTAF Sepak Takraw World Cup were held on 18 May in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In the quadrant event, the Myanmar team defeated the strong Thai team in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals.
In the last group match, Myanmar beat China 2-0 and advanced to the quarterfinal.  In playing against Thailand in the quarterfinal match, Myanmar secured a win in the first match with 17-16 and lost to Thailand with 6-15 in the second match. In the third match, Myanmar won over Thailand with a 15-12 result.
Semifinal matches will be held on 19 May (today) when Myanmar will face India. Host Malaysia will play against Vietnam in another semifinal match. — Shine Htet Zaw/TTA

“Myanmar traditional chinlone is a difficult, profound, and delicate art form. Historical literary records show that more than 1,500 years ago, during the Pyu era, a small silver chinlone ball was discovered among relics unearthed by the archaeological department at Khin Ba Gone near Kalar Kan Village in the ancient city of Hmawza , Pyay District. Chinlone playing is a traditional Myanmar sport that has been preserved and played since ancient times, and it has now advanced to the level of the Southeast Asian Games,” said Union Minister for Sports U Ye Myint Tun in his opening speech delivered Monday morning at the opening ceremony of the Chinlone Referee and Coaching Course (1/2026), held at the multi-purpose hall of the Sports Training Camp (Gold Camp) in Nay Pyi Taw.It is learned that the course was organized as part of the government’s 100-day plan to promote the development of Myanmar’s sports sector, encourage appreciation and value for traditional Myanmar sports, and help discover and nurture a new generation of athletes.
