The Meteorology and Hydrology Department issued an announcement on May 21, regarding the potential development of El Niño conditions. It stated that the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) over the Tropical Pacific Ocean near the equator indicate the possible development of El Niño conditions.

According to forecasts from International Meteorological Agencies based on Numerical Weather Prediction Models, weak El Niño conditions may begin to develop start from June and strong El Niño conditions could occur toward the end of 2026. Although El Niño is a phenomenon that occurs in the Pacific Ocean, its impacts can generally lead to irregular rainfall patterns, higher day temperatures, abnormal storm activity, drought and other extreme weather events. Therefore, relevant sectors and organizations are hereby advised to make necessary advance preparations according to their respective fields. It added that updates regarding the development of El Niño conditions will continue to be issued in a timely manner.

South Korean oil tanker transits Strait of Hormuz
A South Korean oil tanker safely transited the Strait of Hormuz, the country’s foreign ministry said Wednesday, marking the first passage by a South Korean vessel through the waterway since the Iran war began. One South Korean oil tanker “transited the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, 20 May, and is continuing its voyage”, the foreign ministry said in a statement. “Approximately 10 South Korean crew members are on board the vessel.” The announcement followed earlier comments by Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, who told the National Assembly that the tanker was “passing through” the strategic waterway at the time of his remarks. “It is the first South Korea-flagged ship to pass through the Strait of Hormuz since the Iran war began,” a foreign ministry official told AFP earlier. Value-added food production course opens in Taunggyi
The Taunggyi Township Rural Development Department under the Ministry of Cooperative and Rural Development launched a vocational training course on value-added food production (making tomato jam) at Phatnam Village, Taunglaylone Village-tract in Taunggyi Township, Shan State (South), on 18 May.The training course aims to create job opportunities, nurture a skilled workforce, and supplement household income for rural residents. At the opening ceremony, Deputy Director U Khon Myint Thaung of the Shan State (South) Rural Development Department explained that such livelihood support training is provided to enable rural women and local farmers to systematically manufacture value-added products using locally sourced raw materials and establish manageable small-scale businesses.Subsequently, the Pyithu Hluttaw representative and the Amyotha Hluttaw representative delivered opening addresses, followed by the presentation of training materials to the participants by departmental officials.The five-day free training course, running from 18 to 22 May, is being attended by 20 female trainees from Phatnam Village. Experienced instructors are providing systematic theoretical and practical lessons on the step-by-step process of making tomato jam and market linkage techniques.
