Public invited to explore excavation, research of Bagan pagoda foundations
The Research Section of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan Branch) under the Ministry of Hotels, Tourism and Culture conducts excavation and research activities to understand the foundation systems built beneath the ancient pagodas and temples from different historical periods in the Bagan Region.
Since 2023, excavation and research have been carried out on the foundation systems of 12 ancient buildings from different periods, and in 2026, the work will continue at Ngakywe Nadaung Pagoda (No 1603) near the Mee Malaung Monastery west of the Thatbyinnyu Temple, Paukpinya Pagoda (No 1614) in front of the Bagan Archaeological Museum, and ancient building No 1905 located east of Min Oh Chantha Pagoda on the NyaungU-Old Bagan road.
According to the director of the department, the researchers, students, and anyone interested in archaeological excavation and research are welcome to visit and observe the excavation work. — Dipa Lin (IPRD)/KTZH
