Local merchants from Labutta Township of Ayeyawady Region shipped a large volume of shrimp paste to Yangon market in April, said Daw Win Maw, the owner of fish and fish paste trading depot in Labutta Township.

From Labutta Township, locally produced shrimp paste is mainly being shipped and sold to the Yangon market. During March this year, up to 55,000 viss of shrimp paste were exported and sold, while in April, monthly shipments increased to as much as 66,000 viss.

“We are exporting and selling locally produced goods, including shrimp paste, from Labutta Township to the Yangon market. During the past month alone, we were able to ship and sell up to 66,000 viss of shrimp paste. Demand from the Yangon market is currently very high. Shrimp paste is seeing strong demand in the domestic market, and prices have also increased. As shrimp paste trading has improved again, not only business owners but also workers are benefiting,” said Daw Win Maw.

In Labutta Township, seafood traders reportedly purchase small shrimp caught at sea by local fishermen and use them to produce ready-to-eat shrimp paste for sale. The shrimp paste business is regarded as a local production industry, and each shrimp paste production business is said to create employment opportunities for at least 15 to 25 workers in the region.
