The opening ceremony of the 2026 Myanmar Traditional Cultural Maha Thingyan Festival Walking Thingyan was held on the morning of April 13 at the Walking Thingyan site near Kan Thar Yar Lake on Bogyoke Main Road in Monywa. The Sagaing Region Chief Minister U Ko Lay, delivered a New Year greeting speech.

After that, the Region Chief Minister U Ko Lay, the Commander of Northwest Command, Ma-J Gen. Kyaw Thu Ra, the Speaker of the Region Hluttaw, U Tint Hlaing Myint, the Chief Justice of the Region, U Zaw Htoo and the Region Minister for Development Affairs cut the ribbon to officially open the 2026 Myanmar Traditional Cultural Maha Thingyan Festival Walking Thingyan.

Subsequently, the Region Chief Minister and his wife, the Commander and his wife, the Speaker of Region Hluttaw, the Chief Justice of the Region and his wife, and the members of the Region Government and their wives sprinkled fragrant water on the young female Yein dancers from departmental pavilions who had attended the opening ceremony.

Following this, the Region Chief Minister, the Commander, and responsible officials watched and encouraged the performances by the famous vocalists and the young female Yein dancers from departmental pavilions.

Afterward, the Region Chief Minister and responsible officials visited departmental pavilions within the Walking Thingyan area, including the Chindwin Padauk Pavilion, the Electricity/Energy/Transportation Pavilion, the Shwe Thala New Year Pavilion, and the Shwe Padauk Pyo May Pavilion, to watch and encourage the performances of songs and dances by the young female Yein dancers.

The Region Chief Minister and responsible officials then toured and observed the satuditha (charity food offering) of rice and curries being served to city residents who had come to celebrate the Walking Thingyan Festival at the Union Ground by the eastern Kan Thar Yar Lake, and warmly and cordially greeted the residents, it’s reported.

In the year 1387 ME, the traditional Myanmar Maha Thingyan Festival will be celebrated in a courteous and serene manner, in keeping with Myanmar customs, Myanmar style, and Myanmar traditional cultural heritage, to usher in the New Year.On the eve of the traditional Myanmar Maha Thingyan, which falls today on April 13th, the Nay Pyi Taw Myanmar Traditional New Year Thingyan was held at the Nay Pyi Taw City Hall Pavilion or Mandat in accordance with Myanmar traditional cultural heritage. The event was graced by the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, U Min Aung Hlaing, and First Lady, Daw Kyu Kyu Hla.The traditional Myanmar Maha Thingyan Festival was held in accordance with Myanmar customs, Myanmar style, and Myanmar traditional cultural heritage.The President and First Lady, along with the attendees, enjoyed and encouraged performances featuring traditional Myanmar New Year songs and elegant Yein dance performances by artists from the Department of Fine Arts under the Ministry of Hotel and Tourism and Culture) and artists from MRTV under the Ministry of Information.Subsequently, the President and First Lady sprinkled New Year Thingyan water on the Union-level dignitaries, attendees, and Yein dance troupes, following Myanmar traditional customs.Then, the President and First Lady, along with the attendees, proceeded from the City Hall Mandat to the venue where the Nay Pyi Taw Walking Thingyan opening ceremony would be held. Organized by the Rakhine State Government, the Rakhine Traditional Sandalwood Grinding Festival and Water Pouring to Buddha Image, was held as part of the 1387 ME Maha Thingyan Festival, took place on the morning of April 13 at U Ottama Hall in Sittwe and at the Atula Marajin Pyi Lone Chantha  Pagoda.First, after the Rakhine ceremonial drum was sounded to mark the beginning of the Rakhine Traditional Sandalwood Grinding Festival, the State Chief Minister, U Naing Oo, and his wife, the Speaker of Rakhine State Hluttaw, Dr. San Shwe, the Chief Justice of the State High Court and the regional commander cut the ribbon to open the ceremony.Subsequently, the Rakhine State Cultural Dance Troupe performed a dance to the song "Thingyan Atar Kyu Li Yint .Next, the State Chief Minister, U Naing Oo, delivered New Year's wishes, stating that the Traditional Sandalwood Grinding Festival is a traditional custom of the Rakhine people, passed down through generations from the Dhanawaddy  Era, Vesali  Era, Laymyo  Era, and Mrauk-U  Era up to the present day.He prayed that Rakhine State may stand as a peaceful, prosperous, and developed state, that all evil sins may be cleansed, and that the socio-economic lives of the state's people may be highly improved.After that, the Traditional Sandalwood Grinding groups were introduced one by one. The State Chief Minister, his wife, and responsible officials presented honorariums to the sandalwood scented water grinding groups and performance troupes, and then posed for a group photo.Thereafter, carrying the scented water obtained from the ceremony, a procession paraded to the Atula Marajin Pyi Lone Chantha Pagoda in Sittwe to perform the traditional ceremony of Water Pouring to Buddha Image. The State Chief Minister, his wife, and responsible officials paid homage to the pagoda and offered flowers, oil lamps, and water.Then, the ceremony of Water Pouring to Buddha Image was opened.
