The opening ceremony of the 2026 Myanmar Traditional Cultural Maha Thingyan Festival Walking Thingyan was held on the morning of April 13 at the Walking Thingyan site near Kan Thar Yar Lake on Bogyoke Main Road in Monywa. The Sagaing Region Chief Minister U Ko Lay, delivered a New Year greeting speech.

After that, the Region Chief Minister U Ko Lay, the Commander of Northwest Command, Ma-J Gen. Kyaw Thu Ra, the Speaker of the Region Hluttaw, U Tint Hlaing Myint, the Chief Justice of the Region, U Zaw Htoo and the Region Minister for Development Affairs cut the ribbon to officially open the 2026 Myanmar Traditional Cultural Maha Thingyan Festival Walking Thingyan.

Subsequently, the Region Chief Minister and his wife, the Commander and his wife, the Speaker of Region Hluttaw, the Chief Justice of the Region and his wife, and the members of the Region Government and their wives sprinkled fragrant water on the young female Yein dancers from departmental pavilions who had attended the opening ceremony.

Following this, the Region Chief Minister, the Commander, and responsible officials watched and encouraged the performances by the famous vocalists and the young female Yein dancers from departmental pavilions.

Afterward, the Region Chief Minister and responsible officials visited departmental pavilions within the Walking Thingyan area, including the Chindwin Padauk Pavilion, the Electricity/Energy/Transportation Pavilion, the Shwe Thala New Year Pavilion, and the Shwe Padauk Pyo May Pavilion, to watch and encourage the performances of songs and dances by the young female Yein dancers.

The Region Chief Minister and responsible officials then toured and observed the satuditha (charity food offering) of rice and curries being served to city residents who had come to celebrate the Walking Thingyan Festival at the Union Ground by the eastern Kan Thar Yar Lake, and warmly and cordially greeted the residents, it’s reported.
